The aim of this project is to explore the development of a design and production framework for digitally upcycled reclaimed timber in multi-storey, load-bearing systems with clear spans exceeding 6 metres, embracing the inherent variability of the material as a design driver. The teams investigation focuses on strategies to overcome the challenge of material unreliability and enhance future reusability while staying aligned with the realities and needs of the built environment. In parallel, the team explored how the available material stock, and the inherent agency of the timber itself, both inform and constrain the design process.

Robotic fabrication.

The primary contribution was the development of a  design-to-fabrication workflow capable of working with variable material stock. Material was characterised and allocated within a parametric digital model, which was then translated into a fabrication model.

The resulting system is currently in the process of being fabricated.
